LOCAL AREA NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

LOCATED IN MUNICH (GERMANY)
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
1. Ensure the smooth and reliable daily operation of the LAN by constantly monitoring
system performance and executing tuning measures.
2. Implementation support, configuration and administration of hardware and system
software, for LAN Systems to ensure optimal support of business requirements.
3. Perform system maintenance, installation, modification and upgrades to the LAN
hardware to ensure hardware and software compatibility between LAN and WAN
(Wide Area Network) and maintain the information system configuration control
data base for the Agency's LAN systems.
4. Provide in depth support for the LAN systems and assist in related procurement
activities (hardware, system software and maintenance contracts specification and
recommendation).
5. Provide adequate resilience of Local Area Networks services, in accordance with
the respective SLAs, including the development and maintenance of recovery and
fallback arrangements.
6. Performing proactive management, performance evaluation, system analysis, fault
and problem investigation, corrective measures and documentation of activities
(e.g. system availability report) related to the Local Area Networks.
7. Configuration and administration of the passive components within the LAN, e.g.
horizontal and vertical structured cabling, patch panels on each floor, sockets in
each room and the corresponding patch cords.
8. Configuration and administration and maintenance of the active components within
the LAN, e.g. Hubs, Switches.
9. Assist in maintaining the compatibility of hardware systems at all levels (UNIX and
WINDOWS servers, e-mail gateways, WAN, LAN, UNIX workstations, PCs, etc).
10. Producing processes and quality procedures related to the Local Area Networks:
producing and maintaining the LAN systems documentation. Proposing changes to
existing policies and procedures regarding the Local Area Networks.
11. Focal point of the Agency for distribution and administration of NETMA IP
addresses.
12. Liase with other teams and administrators within the CIS Operations Section in
support of the above mentioned tasks.
13. Administration and operation of all necessary utilities (including SW and HW) to
operate the LAN Systems.
14. Participating in acceptance tests of relevant software and hardware devices and
assisting in the integration and testing of interoperability with the other ICT
systems within his area of responsibility.
15. Undertake any other related tasks or duties as directed by the Team leader and
co-operate with the Network / PC Systems Administrator and the NWSC.
Personal Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required
An Information Technology specialist with the following qualification and experience:
Essential
1. A university degree in Computer / Communication Systems or another closely
related scientific field preferably equivalent to a Diploma or Bachelor and
supplemented by a relevant post-graduate qualification. Exceptionally, the lack of a
university degree may be compensated by the demonstration of particular abilities
of interest to the Agency.
2. Good working experience (at least 3 years) with
• Administration of a LAN
• LAN technologies and implementations, especially structured cable
installations.
• Knowledge of IP address management, static and dynamic assignment.
3. Knowledge of LAN management software.
4. Good knowledge in protocol analysis and troubleshooting.
5. Ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently
6. Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English language.
Desirable
1. CCNA certification.
2. Knowledge of switching and routing concepts and adequate familiarity with
relevant communication standards (ISO/OSI, ITU, IEEE, IETF) and protocols
(TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, etc.).
3. Basic knowledge of UNIX.
4. Basic knowledge of encryption technologies and cryptographic procedures.
5. Knowledge of NATO security regulations.
